It’s been nice, but Orton needs to be benched

Michael FabianoPublished: December 16th, 2010 | Tags: Eric Studesville, Kyle Orton, Tim Tebow

Kyle Orton had been one of the most pleasant surprises in fantasy football. Undrafted in most leagues, the veteran went on to be a top-five quarterback earlier in the season.

Unfortunately, it appears the Orton’s carriage has turned back into a pumpkin.

In his last two games, he’s scored a combined 1.82 fantasy points on NFL.com. Now comes word that he’s not even guaranteed to be under center for the Broncos in Week 14.

According to the Denver Post, Orton was officially listed as a “limited” participant in practice due to injured ribs. Interim coach Eric Studesville did say that he would stick with Orton as his starter earlier in the week, but that’s, of course, if he’s at 100 percent.

Regardless, fantasy owners just can’t trust Orton right now. Aside from his ailment, he’s also in danger of being pulled in favor of Tim Tebow if he continues to struggle this week against the Raiders.

With a chance at a fantasy league championship berth at stake, that’s something that you simply can’t risk.

Broncos to Stick With Orton; Despite missing practice with a sore arm

The Broncos may have more reason for a starting quarterback controversy, as starter Kyle Orton didn’t practice on Wednesday due to a “sore arm.” Jeff Legwold of the Denver Post reported that Orton says his arm is fine, that he’s just “sore” after 13 games of a long season, but the Broncos appear to be treading lightly with their starter.

Orton, who exited the loss in Arizona with sore ribs that almost caused him to leave the game, did not throw a pass during the open period of today’s practice. Rookie Tim Tebow appeared poised to take more of the work in practice. Orton also did little during the team’s stretching period, beyond some light jogging. Orton was receiving treatment on his ribs today.

Interim coach Eric Studesville re-affirmed earlier today that Orton would be his starter Sunday. He said Orton, who took a heavy shot in the ribs late in Sunday’s loss to the Cardinals, wasn’t anymore injured than many other players.

Tim Tebow remains a QB in waiting for a team going nowhere.

Orton owners should worry about Tebow

Adam RankPublished: November 23rd, 2010 | Tags: Denver Broncos, Jon Kitna, Josh Freeman, Josh McDaniels, Kyle Orton, Tim Tebow

Tim Tebow was a mild irritant for fantasy owners when he started sneaking a touchdown — or four — away from the other Broncos you actually had on your team. But Tebow could develop into a full-blown fantasy rash if the Broncos continue to falter down the stretch.

Many of you Kyle Orton owners will shudder to even think about this topic. But at some point — when the season is lost in Denver — it seems inevitable that Tebow will get some starts. But just how soon will that happen?

Broncos coach Josh McDaniels would not take the bait from reporters Tuesday when asked this very question, according to  the Denver Post.

“I don’t know,” McDaniels said. ”Not willing to go there. That’s not the case right now, so we’ll think about that when that happens.”

McDaniels is right, mathematically. But a huge home loss to the Raiders and the drubbing in San Diego Monday night should be a final alarm for fantasy enthusiasts who own Orton, who ranks fourth among quarterbacks on NFL.com.

Do not hit the snooze button to get some extra sleep on this one. Grab another quarterback for the stretch drive, stat.

Fantasy editor Michael Fabiano already did the heavy lifting, but there are a few names to consider, starting with Buccaneers QB Josh Freeman and Cowboys QB Jon Kitna. Freeman has one of the best schedules down the stretch. This is also true of the Broncos, which would be awesome if Orton is still starting.
