The reason why Devin Hester fell to Bears in 2006 draft – LenDale White

Former Bears Director of College Scouting Greg Gabriel revealed on the National Football Post how the Bears almost didn’t get a chance to select Devin Hester in the second round of the ’06 NFL Draft.

Thank you, LenDale White and Floyd Reese – the Titans general manager who chose White over Hester at pick No. 45.

Hester, drafted by Bears GM Jerry Angelo twelve picks later, was one (Danieal Manning) of the players Gabriel had his eyes on heading into the draft – “we had to get Devin Hester.”

Remember, it also took the Bills to make this happen.

Buffalo traded their second (No. 42 – Manning) and third-round (No. 73 – Dusty Dvoracek) picks for the Bears’ 26th overall pick (John McCargo) in the first round.

When Gabriel called Hester to inform him the Bears were drafting him he said, “For real? Tennessee called and told me they were going to draft me and then decided against it.”

So close.

Revisiting ’06 draft: As I look back and reminisce watching the draft live, I absolutely wanted Ohio State wide receiver Santonio Holmes at pick No. 26.  Instead, Holmes went the pick before to the defending Super Bowl champion Steelers, who traded up seven slots with the Giants to snag him.

Also, I was truly enamored with fourth-round pick (No. 120) linebacker Jamar Williams from Arizona State.  I honestly believed he was going to be our Roosevelt Colvin or Warrick Holdman to compliment Urlacher and Briggs.  All I heard about him was his instincts and ability to make plays, having a nose for the football.

Falcons’ White active, Saints’ Ivory out for MNF

Wide receiver Roddy White will be active for the Falcons’ Monday Night Football showdown with the New Orleans Saints.

White, who has started in every game this season for the Falcons, missed Thursday’s practice with a knee injury, but he fully participated in Friday and Saturday’s sessions and will be available for the game that could determine whether or not Atlanta possesses home-field advantage throughout the postseason.

Defensive starters linebacker Curtis Lofton (knee), defensive tackle Jonathan Babineaux (shoulder) and defensive end John Abraham (groin) were all listed as questionable but are active.

For the Saints, rookie running back Chris Ivory, who has been bothered by a hamstring injury and was limited in practice this week, has been ruled out.

Vikings Brett Favre Acts Like Another Guy With A White Beard

While many youngsters await the annual return of Santa Claus, Vikings quarterback Brett Favre and his “little helper” Deanna Favre made a heartwarming gesture to help celebrate the holiday season this December.

The Favre’s invited a number of families in need to Winter Park on December 14th for an early Christmas party, making sure they left the training facility weighed down by generous food baskets and many Christmas presents.

The Favre family also donated $60,000 to the Salvation Army.  The donation will be used to provide food baskets to 2,000 other families this year.

“God has blessed us in so many ways, so it’s in our nature to give back,” Brett Favre said.

“Brett and I didn’t have a lot growing up,” added Deanna Favre. “We always feel that we need to reach out to the community, to help give back to all the people who give us so much. We feel like The Salvation Army is the perfect way. They are an organization that takes care of families who are working and trying to make ends meet.”

While I have been openly critical of Favre on this site for years now, it is important to note that this is an extremely generous donation that couldn’t come at a better time.  The Twin Cities Salvation Army has received assistance requests from 1,000 more families than they did last year, but have seen a decrease in donations to the tune of $420,000.

Colts rule out Collie, so target White

Some of you know this drill already. If there is a wide receiver or tight end from the Colts available in your fantasy league, go ahead and add him now.

The Colts have already ruled out WR Austin Collie this week vs. the Chargers, meaning WR Blair White will be the team’s third receiver. You should look at White as a possible No. 3 receiver for your fantasy team, too. This holds true despite the fact that the Chargers have allowed the second fewest points to fantasy receivers this season.

Those of you who are frustrated with Collie, keep him on your roster. He has clearly emerged as the Colts’ second option behind WR Reggie Wayne.

Start Falcons’ White, Turner against Ravens

Falcons WR Roddy White missed practice on Monday, but told our Steve Wyche that he will be ready to go against the Ravens on Thursday night. That game will be broadcast on NFL Network.

White told Wyche that he sustained a bruised right knee during the first quarter of Sunday’s 27-21 victory over the Buccaneers. Wyche did note that White did not have a noticeable limp on Tuesday.

Start White and RB Michael Turner this week. Turner is a matchup-proof runner, and while the Ravens have held opposing running backs to just over 11 fantasy points per game this season, some runners have had success. Dolphins RB Ronnie Brown was having a nice game last week until Miami fell behind and had to throw the ball. Browns RB Peyton Hillis also smoked the Ravens for 180 total yards and a touchdown in Week 3.

And make sure your lineup is set for that Thursday start.

Just keep Colts WR White on your roster

Colts WR Austin Collie is already recovering from his concussion, and his status for Sunday’s game against the Bengals is still in question. But what is not in question is that you need to make sure that you have WR Blair White, and pretty much every Colts player, on your fantasy roster.

Maybe even RB Javarris James, too.

White’s name seemingly comes up every other week as another one of the Colts receivers gets injured. Even when Collie returns, it is only a matter of time before WRs Reggie Wayne or Pierre Garcon go down. At least that seems to be the trend for Colts players this season. So, just keep White to be safe.

We are starting to come to the time of the season when handcuffs are really important. If you have extra space on your roster, add some handcuffs. For instance, if you have any of the remaining Colts receivers, pick up White (though he likely figures into the game plan this week).

Normally, it’s a good idea to keep a bunch of bye week replacements and that extra defense on your roster, just in case. But no need for that anymore. And really, if you are still clinging to the hope that, say, Texans WR Jacoby Jones is going to be a sleeper this season, let that dream die.

Make a move to ensure that your starters are handcuffed. Your roster should be pretty much set, so just make sure your studs are insured.
