Rams’ Bradford a game-time decision vs. Cowboys

After sustaining a high-ankle sprain last week, Rams quarterback Sam Bradford has sat out practice the past two days and is a game-time decision for Sunday at Dallas. If he can’t go, it will be A.J. Feeley taking the snaps for St. Louis, but unless you are hurting in the worst way for a quarterback, he’s best left on the waiver wire. The bigger issue is what happens to newly-acquired receiver Brandon Lloyd.

The hope had been that Lloyd would provide a boost for Bradford and the rest of the flagging Rams offense. That hope may be on hold for another week or two as the team’s franchise quarterback recovers. Expect Dallas to load the box against Steven Jackson and force the Rams to beat them through the air. Likewise, the rest of St. Louis’ receivers are big red flags against a Dallas defense that will likely be on the attack.  They were a risky play even if Bradford was healthy. If he’s hobbled or out, avoid any Rams altogether.

No Bradford: Feeley last won start in 2004

Quarterback Sam Bradford did not miss a snap during his 2010 rookie season with the St. Louis Rams.

Bradford did not make it through the Rams' first game this season, missing the final nine offensive snaps against Philadelphia after injuring a finger. The pounding Bradford has taken caught up with him Saturday when the Rams downgraded him to doubtful for their game against Dallas in Week 7.

A.J. Feeley will start. Signing Tom Brandstater from the practice squad indicates Bradford won't be available.

The down time should be good for Bradford, who hasn't practiced since suffering a high-ankle sprain on the Rams' final offensive play against Green Bay last week. If he wasn't healthy enough to drop back and throw in practice Friday, the ankle wasn't going to let him scramble away from DeMarcus Ware and the Cowboys' defense, either.

Bradford's injury comes just as the offense was showing signs of improvement with a 424-yard game against the Packers. Acquiring receiver Brandon Lloyd and welcoming back receiver Mark Clayton from injury (not this week, but soon) will give Bradford a better chance for success once he does return. High sprains can take weeks to heal, however. The injury could affect Bradford for the remainder of the season, but if he has receivers getting open and holding onto the ball, he'll be in better position to find them before pressure arrives.

The last time Feeley, 34, started in the regular season, he completed 19 of 42 passes for 220 yards with one touchdown and four interceptions for Philadelphia during a 2007 home defeat to Seattle. The last time he won a start was in 2004, for Miami. He has a 7-8 career record as a starter.

QBs Campbell, Bradford, Schaub Are Hurting

Jason Campbell of the Raiders is out indefinitely with a broken collarbone, Sam Bradford of the Rams is questionable with a high left ankle sprain and Matt Schaub of the Texans has a chest bruise but isn't likely to miss Sunday's game against the Titans.

The coaching ranks were hit, too. New Orleans coach Sean Payton had surgery to repair a torn meniscus and fractured bone in his left leg on Monday, a day after one of his players was tackled into him on the sideline. And Tampa Bay defensive backs coach Jimmy Lake injured his left knee on the sideline while celebrating Tanard Jackson's interception during the Buccaneers' win over Payton's Saints.

Campbell was expected to have surgery Monday, and said that if everything goes right he could be back in six weeks. He was injured late in the first half of Oakland's 24-17 victory over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday when he landed hard on his shoulder at the end of a scramble.

Bradford is in a walking boot, and A.J. Feeley is likely to take most of the snaps when the winless Rams resume practice Wednesday. Bradford's status for Sunday's game at Dallas is in question.

Bradford has been sacked 21 times the first five games.

Also, offensive tackle Rodger Saffold (ankle) and running back Cadillac Williams (thigh) were scheduled to undergo MRI exams.

Schaub underwent an MRI exam Monday, and Texans coach Gary Kubiak said his QB is "just beat up," will probably sit out Wednesday's practice but "all indications are he'll be OK."

As for Payton, the coach was expected to remain in the hospital until Tuesday.

"The surgery went very well," Saints orthopedic surgeon Dr. Deryk Jones said in a statement released by the team.

Payton should be able to return to work by Wednesday but probably won't be able to put weight on his left leg for about eight weeks, Jones said, adding that a full recovery could take three to six months.

Payton was hurt during New Orleans' 26-20 loss at Tampa Bay on Sunday when Saints tight end Jimmy Graham was tackled into his coach along the sideline.

Payton has said he expects to call plays from the booth when the Saints host Indianapolis on Sunday night.

Also:

— Bears star Devin Hester should be OK after leaving Sunday's win over Minnesota with a chest injury. Coach Lovie Smith said Monday the injury "shouldn't be serious" and that it belongs more on the "bumps and bruises" list.

— Lions coach Jim Schwartz said running back Jahvid Best started showing "concussion-like symptoms" after the loss to the 49ers.

— Browns running back Peyton Hillis has an injured left hamstring, and coach Pat Shurmur does not know how long he will be sidelined. Hillis was injured in the first quarter of Sunday's 24-17 loss at Oakland. On Monday, Hillis underwent an MRI, which revealed the injury. Shurmur did not provide any specifics on Hillis' injury.

— Texans safety Dominique Barber will go on injured reserve with a foot injury, and safety Danieal Manning (lower leg bruise) and left tackle Duane Brown (knee bruise) are both day to day.

There was good news: Kubiak is hopeful WR Andre Johnson will return after missing two games with a right hamstring injury.

— Bengals middle linebacker Rey Maualuga wore a cast on his left foot, an indication his ankle injury will sideline him for more than one game. The team said Maualuga sprained his left ankle during practice last Thursday and wasn't active in Sunday's win over the Colts.

— Cowboys running back Felix Jones has a high ankle sprain and left guard Bill Nagy has a broken ankle and is likely done for the season.

— Redskins left guard Kory Lichtensteiger is out for the year with torn ligaments in his right knee. Coach Mike Shanahan also indicated Chris Cooley's season might be over after the tight end broke the left index finger in Sunday's loss to Philadelphia. Cooley will have surgery Wednesday. Meanwhile, left tackle Trent Williams is expected to miss at least a couple of weeks with a severely sprained right ankle.

— Packers coach Mike McCarthy said cornerback Sam Shields sustained a concussion during Sunday's victory over St. Louis and will go through the testing protocol this week.

— Vikings safety Jamarca Sanford and center John Sullivan each suffered a concussion in Sunday's loss to the Bears. Coach Leslie Frazier said he wasn't sure whether either player would even be cleared to practice this week, let alone be able to play on Sunday. Right tackle Phil Loadholt also left the game because of inflammation in his knee. Cornerback Antoine Winfield also missed his second straight game because of a neck injury.

— The Bills enter their bye week down another left tackle, with rookie Chris Hairston to miss up to four weeks with an injured right ankle. Linebacker Shawne Merriman's status is uncertain after the star pass-rusher aggravated an Achilles tendon injury last week. And there's no telling when starting defensive tackle Kyle Williams will return from a nagging foot injury.

Rams' Bradford Has High Ankle Sprain

Bradford has a high left ankle sprain and is in a walking boot, leaving his status for this week's game at Dallas in question.

"I think you are always concerned when you see your quarterback in a boot," Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo said. "In my experience with the high ankle sprains, you just never know."

Bradford was injured during winless St. Louis' 24-3 loss at Green Bay on Sunday, and Spagnuolo said he had a noticeable limp when he reported for a team meeting Monday afternoon.

The only consolation for St. Louis (0-5) is Bradford's plant foot is his right one, which could help him get back on the field sooner.

Backup A.J. Feeley likely will take the majority of the snaps with the first team when the Rams return to practice on Wednesday. The 34-year-old Feeley didn't get any game snaps last year and is 1 for 5 for 21 yards this year in mopup duty. The Rams likely will elevate Tim Brandstater from the practice squad.

"Oh yeah, A.J. will be ready," Spagnuolo said. "We'll be ready for any possible situation. That's why A.J. is here and I'm glad we've got him. He's been through this before."

There are two other injury concerns from the loss to the Packers, with offensive tackle Rodger Saffold (ankle bruise) and running back Cadillac Williams (thigh) scheduled to undergo MRI exams.

Feeley, in his 11th season, said he's up for the challenge.

"It's the nature of the game," Feeley said. "Do I want to play? Yes. I've got that fire. I'm definitely excited about it."

Bradford was sacked 21 times in the first five games.

Bradford or Feeley could have a new veteran receiver to throw to on Sunday.

The Rams acquired Lloyd from the Denver Broncos in exchange for a 2012 sixth-round draft pick on Monday. They are hoping Lloyd can make an immediate impact given he's being reunited with offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and playing in the same system.

"There shouldn't be any kind of a learning curve," general manager Billy Devaney said. "It's up to him and the coaches to see how quickly he gets out there."

Spagnuolo remembers Lloyd impacting the game plan in last year's game at Denver.

"We had to be aware of where he was and change some things coverage-wise," Spagnuolo said. "So that probably speaks volumes right there."

The Rams made room for Lloyd by releasing Mike Sims-Walker, a disappointment after getting a free-agent deal in August. Sims-Walker, who was inactive on Sunday, had six catches against the Giants in Week 2 but dropped two passes in Week 4 against the Redskins, and totaled 11 receptions with a 12.6-yard average and no touchdowns.

Danny Amendola, who led the team in receiving last year, is on injured reserve after dislocating his left elbow in the opener.

So for the most part they've gone with a young crew that includes Brandon Gibson, Danario Alexander and rookies Greg Salas and Austin Pettis.

Wide receiver Mark Clayton and defensive back Marquis Johnson, both coming off knee injuries, could return from the PUP list this week.

"Those two guys have really worked their butts off, but you don't really know until you get into the real game," Spagnuolo said. "The hard thing is going to be simulating that to find out where they're at."

Chris Chamberlain started ahead of free-agent pickup Ben Leber at outside linebacker against the Packers and Spagnuolo said he'll likely start again this week.

Sam Bradford Has A High Ankle Sprain

The Rams starting quarterback Sam Bradford has a high ankle sprain, the nasty older brother of the regular ankle sprain and is questionable for Sunday’s game at Dallas.  Steve Spagnuolo announced the injury in his Monday press conference in St. Louis.

Sam Bradford is in a walking boot and backup QB AJ Feeley will be taking all the reps in practice on Wednesday.  High ankle sprains are usually multiple week injuries, however, the Rams are still classifying Bradford’s status as “day to day”.

With Week 1 nearly in the books, here’s a look at the notable injuries from Sunday’s games:

The Rams’ loss to the Eagles was compounded by a number of injuries. The team announced X-rays on QB Sam Bradford’s injured right finger were negative, but he could have suffered nerve damage. Derrick Ward also left Sunday’s game with a right ankle injury. In what looks to be a huge blow for the Panthers, LB Jon Beason exited Sunday’s game in Arizona with an ankle injury. Bradford leaves game for Rams

NFL.com StaffPublished: September 11th, 2011 | Tags: Sam Bradford, A.J. Feeley, St. Louis Rams, Week 1 injuries 2011

UPDATE II: Here’s Bradford after the game on his finger injury, “I don’t see there being any way I’m not going to be on the field next Monday night.” According to the Rams, X-rays on Bradford’s finger were negative, but he could have nerve damage. … CB Ron Bartell‘s injury is being described by the team as a “stinger,” but it’s not considered to be serious.

UPDATE: Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo told reporters during his postgame news conference that Bradford “banged” his index finger, but it isn’t broken. Spagnuolo said Amendola will have an MRI exam on his injured elbow, and the team would know more about Jackson’s quad injury Monday. Spagnuolo also categorized Smith’s injury as a “high” ankle sprain.

The Rams’ rough Sunday continues to get worse. QB Sam Bradford left the game midway through the fourth quarter against the Eagles with what initially appeared to be a right hand injury.

Bradford was injured while following through on a throw, and replays showed his right hand, and specifically his thumb, hit the hand of an oncoming pass rusher. Bradford left the field and headed into the tunnel, likely for X-rays. He was replaced by A.J. Feeley.

With the Rams trailing 31-13, we might not see Bradford again today.
