Tomlinson Leaves Jets Game With Illness

Literally.

The veteran running back, who spent his first nine NFL seasons with San Diego before leaving as a free agent for New York, got his first start of the season Sunday. He hung around as long as he could before leaving with the flu, and didn't play a role as the Jets rallied for a 27-21 victory.

"I woke up this morning feeling pretty bad, but was able to push through as long as I could," Tomlinson said. "I basically didn't have any energy and the flu really just took over."

Tomlinson finished with five rushes for 14 yards and three receptions for 37. He went over 600 career catches, but it was his backfield partner, Shonn Greene, who had the biggest impact with 112 yards rushing, averaging 5.6 yards a carry.

Jets coach Rex Ryan praised LT for even getting on the field.

"Before the game, he was ill, it looked like NASCAR coming in," Ryan said. "Like getting four tires and gas, they were all working on him."

Tomlinson said during the week he held no bitterness toward the Chargers, who had little interest in retaining him after the '09 season. The 2006 league MVP came to New York, had a solid season last year and has been a key figure in the locker room for his leadership.

"I wasn't going to treat it like a playoff game because both teams are going to continue to play the rest of their schedule," he said. "But I'd be lying if I said this didn't add some satisfaction. Just moving on, you never really get to close that chapter until you face them, and the win makes it even better."

Earlier, Jets starting linebacker David Harris returned in the third quarter after injuring his left ankle. Harris left late in the second quarter, did some drills on the sideline at halftime and got back on the field as the period wound down.

Rookie defensive tackle Kenrick Ellis also left with an ankle injury in the opening quarter. He didn't return.

San Diego left tackle Marcus McNeill and running back Ryan Mathews both returned late in the second quarter after leaving with injuries.

McNeill went down on a running play with an undisclosed injury, but eventually walked to the sideline and sat on the Chargers' bench. He was replaced by Brandyn Dombroski before coming back in for San Diego's third series of the half.

But McNeill sat out most of the second half and the Chargers refused to reveal the nature of his injury.

Early in the second period, Mathews went back to the locker room with a thumb injury, but he also came back on that third series.

Freeman leaves for Buccaneers

NFL.com StaffPublished: September 11th, 2011 | Tags: Josh Freeman, Josh Johnson, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Week 1 injuries 2011

UPDATE: Freeman has returned from the locker room to the sideline, and looks to have been fitted with a flak jacket around his ribs as he warms up. It looks like we’ll see Freeman again.

While Matthew Stafford has managed to stay in Sunday’s game in Tampa, the case isn’t the same for Bucs QB Josh Freeman.

Freeman left the game late during the third quarter following a 2-yard scramble. He immediately motioned to the sideline after the play, and then left the field and ran into the tunnel with a team trainer. It could be another case of cramping, as the heat is a factor today in Tampa.

Josh Johnson came in for one play to finish the drive, and started the next series for the Bucs. No word yet from the Bucs.

Bradford leaves game for Rams

NFL.com StaffPublished: September 11th, 2011 | Tags: Sam Bradford, A.J. Feeley, St. Louis Rams, Week 1 injuries 2011

UPDATE II: Here’s Bradford after the game on his finger injury, “I don’t see there being any way I’m not going to be on the field next Monday night.” According to the Rams, X-rays on Bradford’s finger were negative, but he could have nerve damage. … CB Ron Bartell‘s injury is being described by the team as a “stinger,” but it’s not considered to be serious.

UPDATE: Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo told reporters during his postgame news conference that Bradford “banged” his index finger, but it isn’t broken. Spagnuolo said Amendola will have an MRI exam on his injured elbow, and the team would know more about Jackson’s quad injury Monday. Spagnuolo also categorized Smith’s injury as a “high” ankle sprain.

The Rams’ rough Sunday continues to get worse. QB Sam Bradford left the game midway through the fourth quarter against the Eagles with what initially appeared to be a right hand injury.

Bradford was injured while following through on a throw, and replays showed his right hand, and specifically his thumb, hit the hand of an oncoming pass rusher. Bradford left the field and headed into the tunnel, likely for X-rays. He was replaced by A.J. Feeley.

With the Rams trailing 31-13, we might not see Bradford again today.

Cowboys’ Austin leaves game with forearm injury

Frank TadychPublished: November 25th, 2010 | Tags: Dallas Cowboys, Jon Kitna, Miles Austin, Week 12 injuries 2010

UPDATE: Austin returned to the game on the following series. The FOX broadcast reported X-rays on Austin’s forearm were negative.

Not much is going right for the Cowboys in their Thanksgiving Day matchup against the Saints. Dallas trails 17-0 at the end of the first quarter, and Pro Bowl WR Miles Austin has left the game with a forearm injury.

Austin was injured at the end of a 6-yard reception late in the first quarter. Officials initially ruled that Austin had fumbled on the play, but it was overturned after the Cowboys challenged the call (about the only thing going right for Jason Garrett so far; he’s 2-for-2 on challenges).

Trainers checked out Austin’s right forearm on the sideline, and he soon headed toward the locker room for X-rays. The team announced he’s questionable to return.

Dez Bryant and Roy Williams have been in on the base packages for the Cowboys.

Hawkins leaves behind legacy of losses

Dan Hawkins came to Colorado after racking up 45 wins and four conference titles in his last four years at Boise State, helping lay the foundation for the unprecedented success the Broncos have enjoyed since his departure.

"I thought he would bring that same level of play to Colorado," said Colorado chancellor Philip P. DiStefano.

[+] EnlargeHawkins John Rieger/US PresswireCoach Dan Hawkins was never able to find consistent success at Colorado. There weren't many mile-highs over Dan Hawkins' four-plus years at Colorado. The highest was a win over then-No. 3 Oklahoma in 2007 that keyed off the only season under Hawkins that ended with a bowl.

Any glimmer of hope that win provided was snuffed out by a mountain of 16 losses over the next two seasons.

They hoped he'd at least near the heights former coach Bill McCartney once did as coach in the early 90s. Hawkins never did.

Even that 2007 season ended with three more losses to unranked teams, including an Independence Bowl loss that denied Hawkins his best opportunity to secure a winning season in Boulder.

His one big high was far outweighed by numerous lows, beginning with an embarrassing loss to FCS opponent Montana State in his first game as Buffaloes coach. Last year, his team went on national television and fell behind Toledo by 30 points to begin 0-2 in a season that Hawkins said would feature "10 wins and no excuses." The Buffaloes finished 3-9.

If he didn't regret his "Go play intramurals, brother!" rant at the 2007 signing day news conference, he should have. It did nothing but provide an embarrassing YouTube moment for a coach short on success at the major level. And as another coach in the Big 12 can attest, YouTube fame never dies. For better or worse, that might be his most lasting moment as Colorado coach.

But no low was more spectacular than the one he treated Colorado fans to on Saturday, a loss like no other. He refused to run the ball consistently ("We just didn't want to be one-dimensional," he said.) with a four-touchdown lead against a team that previously had a strong case as the worst team in a BCS conference, and the only team in the Big 12 worse than Hawkins' squad.

He provided Kansas with its biggest comeback in school history, and the largest blown lead (28 points) in the 121-year history of Colorado football. Worse, he allowed it to happen in just over 11 minutes.

Give Hawkins credit: He went out with class. Ten minutes of Tuesday's farewell was spent thanking any and everyone for the time he'd been given to lead the Buffs.

"They, like the rest of us, wish we had more wins," Hawkins said.

By now, everyone knew those wins weren't coming under Hawkins, who also wished the program well, alluding to the "national championship chapter that's right around the corner."

Hawkins replacement, interim coach Brian Cabral, emotionally thanked the coach as well.

"There's no question Hawk gave us everything he had," he said. "No question. It wasn't for a lack of trying."

But despite those efforts, Hawkins never even came close to the success everyone in the program hoped. He never reached the heights of former Kansas coach Mark Mangino or the popularity of former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach, but neither went out with the panache of Hawkins' blazing fiasco.

That capped off a string of 17 consecutive losses outside Colorado, and the program's first-ever 0-5 start in Big 12 play, and the loss to the Jayhawks leaves the Buffaloes alone at the bottom of the Big 12 totem pole.

A reporter asked Hawkins on Monday how you come back from a loss like that.

Truth is, you don't.
