Neck injury ends season for Packers’ Collins

NFL.com StaffPublished: September 19th, 2011 | Tags: Nick Collins, Green Bay Packers, Mike McCarthy

nfl.use('nfl-video', function (Y) { var video = new Y.NFL.Video.Player({ srcNode: "#video-player-09000d5d82263f7b", contentId: "09000d5d82263f7b", related: "home", dartURL: "http://ad.doubleclick.net/pfadx/nfl.special/blog/home;s1=blog;s2=home;slot=inpage;nfl=ad;tile=3;sz=640x360;ord=?", playerName: "blog_large_embedded", render: true, size: "large", uniqid: "09000d5d82263f7b"});});

The neck injury that Packers safety Nick Collins suffered Sunday against the Panthers will end his 2011 season.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy confirmed the news during his Monday news conference. Collins is still being evaluated, but the decision was made to shut down the All-Pro.

McCarthy said Collins returned from Charlotte on Monday after an overnight stay at a local hospital. He was wearing a neck brace and attended a team meeting.

“He arrived back in Green Bay at about one o’clock (on Monday),” McCarthy said. “Nick told the team about it.”

Collins was injured while trying to make a tackle during the fourth quarter. As Collins dove toward Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart’s legs, his helmet hit Stewart’s hip area and his neck bent awkwardly. He landed face-down on the turf. Collins was taken off the field on a stretcher but gave a slight wave to the crowd with his right hand as he was being carried off.

RG Kraig Urbik to Miss 2 to 4 Weeks with Knee Injury

Starting right guard Kraig Urbik will be out two to four weeks with a left knee injury sustained in the second quarter of Sunday’s victory against the Raiders.

Urbik will be replaced in the lineup by Chad Rinehart. “He did a pretty good job,” Bills coach Chan Gailey said of Rinehart.

“There’s a couple things he was rusty on, but he did a pretty good job. I’ve got confidence in him that he’ll be able to handle it.”

Rinehart briefly challenged for the starting left guard job during training camp, but will be returning to the position he started three games at last season for the Bills. The fourth-year man from Northern Iowa measures 6-foot-5 and 323 pounds.

The Rams’ loss to the Eagles was compounded by a number of injuries. The team announced X-rays on QB Sam Bradford’s injured right finger were negative, but he could have suffered nerve damage. UPDATE: The Steelers seem to have avoided a major loss, as Tomlin said during his postgame news conference that Harrison’s knee injury “doesn’t appear to be serious.”

UPDATE: The latest from the press box in San Diego is that Kaeding isn’t expected to return to the game. Scifres continues to handle the kicking and punting duties for the Chargers.

Chargers kicker Nate Kaeding was carted off the field Sunday following the opening kickoff in San Diego with an apparent left knee injury.

Seahawks’ Hasselbeck sidelined by hip injury

Frank TadychPublished: December 26th, 2010 | Tags: Matt Hasselbeck, Charlie Whitehurst, Pete Carroll, Seattle Seahawks, Week 16 injuries 2010

For the second straight week, we have a Charlie Whitehurst sighting. This time around, though, it’s because starting QB Matt Hasselbeck left Sunday’s game during the first quarter with a hip injury.

The Seahawks announced Hasselbeck is questionable to return. The FOX game broadcast reported the injury is to Hasselbeck’s left hip.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll elected to stick with Hasselbeck as his starter against the Bucs after contemplating a switch to Whitehurst following last Sunday’s loss to the Falcons. Hasselbeck was benched during the third quarter following a series of mistakes.

This time around, Carroll didn’t have to make that decision.

The Seahawks are still alive for an NFC playoff spot. With a win by the Rams over the 49ers, the NFC West title will be decided next week when the Seahawks host the Rams.

Big Ben’s injury won’t have fantasy impact

Michael FabianoPublished: December 2nd, 2010 | Tags: Ben Roethlisberger, Eli Manning, Kyle Orton, Mark Sanchez, Matt Cassel, Matt Ryan, Ryan Fitzpatrick

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that Ben Roethlisberger suffered a broken fifth metatarsal bone in his right foot last week against the Bills. However, the Steelers responded to the report with a statement that claims Big Ben aggravated an old injury where scar tissue is present.

Regardless, he’s not expected to miss any time because of the ailment. That’s a relief for fantasy footballers who are leaning on him for the stretch run.

The real question is whether or not Roethlisberger’s ailment, coupled with a contest against the Ravens, makes him a risky starter in Week 13. While I would start Matt Cassel, Mark Sanchez and Eli Manning ahead of him, I don’t see the Steelers quarterback as having a terrible matchup.

In fact, the Ravens have given up big passing performances to Kyle Orton, Ryan Fitzpatrick and Matt Ryan this season. Furthermore, Roethlisberger has thrown for a combined 905 yards with eight touchdowns and two interceptions in his last four starts against them.

Cowboys’ Austin leaves game with forearm injury

Frank TadychPublished: November 25th, 2010 | Tags: Dallas Cowboys, Jon Kitna, Miles Austin, Week 12 injuries 2010

UPDATE: Austin returned to the game on the following series. The FOX broadcast reported X-rays on Austin’s forearm were negative.

Not much is going right for the Cowboys in their Thanksgiving Day matchup against the Saints. Dallas trails 17-0 at the end of the first quarter, and Pro Bowl WR Miles Austin has left the game with a forearm injury.

Austin was injured at the end of a 6-yard reception late in the first quarter. Officials initially ruled that Austin had fumbled on the play, but it was overturned after the Cowboys challenged the call (about the only thing going right for Jason Garrett so far; he’s 2-for-2 on challenges).

Trainers checked out Austin’s right forearm on the sideline, and he soon headed toward the locker room for X-rays. The team announced he’s questionable to return.

Dez Bryant and Roy Williams have been in on the base packages for the Cowboys.

Cowboys’ Barber sidelined with calf injury

Frank TadychPublished: November 25th, 2010 | Tags: Dallas Cowboys, marion barber, Week 12 injuries 2010

The Cowboys are trying to close out a Thanksgiving Day comeback over the Saints, but they’ll likely have to do it without Marion Barber.

Barber is currently on the sidelines with his left calf area wrapped, and according to the FOX game broadcast is questionable to return. He appeared to be injured during two failed goal-line runs late during the fourth quarter.

He had 10 rushes for 19 yards and a touchdown, plus two receptions for eight yards, before leaving.

With this game nearing a conclusion, it doesn’t appear we’ll see Barber again. But a serious injury could impact the Cowboys’ backfield rotation between Barber, Felix Jones and Tashard Choice.

49ers’ Davis suffers ankle injury

Frank TadychPublished: November 21st, 2010 | | Tags: Delanie Walker, San Francisco 49ers, Vernon Davis, Week 11 injuries 2010

The 49ers, trailing 21-0 at home to the Bucs, are running out of time to stage a comeback. And any rally will likely come without Pro Bowl TE Vernon Davis.

The team announced midway through the fourth quarter that Davis is questionable to return with an ankle injury. If Davis isn’t able to go with the 49ers in desperation mode, it must be a serious injury.

Davis’ impact on the stat sheet has been minimal; he has one reception for 3 yards.

Delanie Walker is currently in the game for the 49ers.

Chiefs’ Albert sidelined hip injury

Frank TadychPublished: November 21st, 2010 | | Tags: Barry Richardson, Brandon Albert, Kansas City Chiefs, Week 11 injuries 2010

The Chiefs are finishing out a blowout win over the Cardinals, but their doing it without starting LT Brandon Albert.

The team announced during the second half Albert had suffered a hip injury and was questionable to return. Albert is an integral piece for the NFL’s top rushing team, and would be a huge loss if he were to miss any significant amount of time for the Chiefs.

The Chiefs are putting up another dominant rushing day so far against the Cardinals, posting 159 yards on the ground.

Albert was replaced by Barry Richardson to close out the game.

Seahawks’ Mike Williams out with foot injury

Frank TadychPublished: November 21st, 2010 | | Tags: Mike Williams, Seattle Seahawks, Week 11 injuries 2010

Late during their blowout loss to the Saints, the Seahawks announced WR Mike Williams wouldn’t return due to a left foot injury.

Williams has had an amazing season after working his way back to the NFL, so here’s hoping it’s not a serious injury that would derail his comeback. He has six receptions for 109 yards against the Saints, both team highs.

Williams did leave the game briefly during the first quarter with what appeared to be some sort of left leg injury. Following a 68-yard reception down the sideline from Matt Hasselbeck, Williams’ left foot was caught underneath the defender as he was brought down. Williams did return to play most of the game, but it could be that play contributed to the injury that forced him out later in the game.

The Seahawks also lost CB Marcus Trufant (head) and DE Kentwan Balmer (facial laceration) to injuries during the first half.

Dolphins’ Procter helped off after knee injury

Frank TadychPublished: November 18th, 2010 | | Tags: Miami Dolphins, Richie Incognito, Cory Procter, Week 11 injuries 2010, Pat McQuistan

Dolphins center Cory Procter was helped off the field during the first quarter of Thursday night’s game against the Bears, a tough blow for a team already battling injuries along the offensive line.

Procter injured his left leg while running downfield on a screen pass, although he wasn’t touched on the play. His left leg simply gave out, and he was in immediate pain as he was down on the turf. Procter wasn’t able to put much weight on the leg as he was helped off.

Procter was soon carted off the sideline with his left knee in a brace. He is questionable to return with a knee injury.

Procter was in the lineup at center replacing Joe Berger, who is out with a knee injury. Pat McQuistan came in to play left guard, with guard Richie Incognito sliding over to center. With Tyler Thigpen making his first start of the season, the combination of a new quarterback and the third-string center could be an issue for the Dolphins.

Colts TE Tamme not on injury report

Adam RankPublished: November 17th, 2010 | | Tags: Indianapolis Colts, Joseph Addai, Austin Collie, Jacob Tamme, Con Air, Mykelti Williamson

Colts TE Jacob Tamme is the strongest man on Earth. There were reports that Tamme was barely able to walk after Sunday’s win over the Bengals. And yet, Tamme was not even on the team’s injury report on Wednesday.

And the Colts put everybody on the injury report.

What a marvelous recovery. Must be similar to the way that Mykelti Williamson goes from near-death to fighting convicts after an insulin shot in “Con-Air.”

So this should be seen as good news as most people likely do not know who the Colts backup to the backup tight end is. (It’s Brody Eldgridge and Gijon Robinson, though the former is listed above Tamme on the team’s official depth chart.)

Colts WR Austin Collie was limited in practice and is considered “day-to-day.” Keep an eye on his status on Thursday. RB Joesph Addai participated in some pre-practice drills, but was listed as a “non-participation” casualty for Wednesday.

Broncos lose Hill to neck injury

Frank TadychPublished: November 14th, 2010 | | Tags: Denver Broncos, Renaldo Hill, Week 10 injuries 2010

While very little has gone wrong for the Broncos during their blowout of the Chiefs, they have lost starting SS Renaldo Hill to a neck injury.

The Broncos announced during the third quarter that Hill was considered questionable to return. He’s been replaced by David Bruton. If there’s any question on the Broncos’ part about Hill’s ability to return to this one, the scoreboard likely dictates he won’t.
