Adam Jones can boost Bengals

Adam Jones has been cleared to practice, and the veteran cornerback can help an already strong Cincinnati defense.

He will bolster the depth of the NFL's fourth-ranked pass defense and should press Kelly Jennings as the nickelback. In five games last season, he had one interception, three pass defenses, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries, one of which he returned for a touchdown.

Jones can also provide a boost as a punt returner. The Bengals' Brandon Tate ranks 13th in the league with a 10.6-yard average. Jones had the team's longest punt return last year (a 22-yarder).

Of course, this assumes Jones returns to the same level he played last year. He's been on the physically unable to perform list because of a 2010 neck injury that prevented him from being cleared at the beginning of training camp.

The Bengals have a three-week window to evaluate him at practice without having to make a roster move and can add him at any point. Jones indicated that he expects to play Sunday at Seattle.

Raiders Acquire Carson Palmer From Bengals at Trade Deadline

The deal was a bold one for both teams, but it was a steal for the Bengals. Their owner, Mike Brown, had vowed for months that he would let Palmer, a former Heisman Trophy winner who had grown disenchanted with the sometimes dysfunctional team that drafted him first over all in 2003, retire rather than trade him.

After Palmer demanded a trade, Brown maintained that there was a principle at stake, that players should honor the commitment to a team they made by signing a contract, even though those contracts are not guaranteed and teams can cut or trade players on a whim.

Palmer, who has never spoken publicly about the situation, sold his home in the Cincinnati area and had appeared willing to forfeit the $11 million in salary he was due. (His contract with the Bengals went through the 2014 season.) He essentially quit, and even in recent days, the Bengals said that they would not trade him.

Brown’s reputation for stubbornness paid off, allowing him to maintain bargaining leverage. That was enhanced when the rookie quarterback Andy Dalton led the Bengals to a 4-2 start and the Raiders’ starter, Jason Campbell, broke his collarbone Sunday, sending the Raiders scurrying for a new quarterback less than two weeks after the death of Al Davis.

In a statement, Brown referred to Dalton’s emergence as one reason the Bengals were willing to deal Palmer. “We also find ourselves rather suddenly in position of being able to receive real value for Carson that can measurably improve our team — which is performing well and is showing real promise for this year and years to come.”

The Raiders, with the first-year coach Hue Jackson now leading the way on personnel decisions, gave the Bengals their first-round draft pick in 2012 and a conditional draft pick in 2013 that is a second-rounder unless the Raiders win a playoff game, when it would become a first-rounder, according to Fox Sports, which first reported the trade.

“If you know Hue, you don’t get recruited any harder,” Palmer said. “For the past six weeks, I thought I was retired. Before the start of the season, I was training like it was a normal off-season. Week 1 hit, I thought I have got to find what the next phase of my life would be.

“I’m honored,” he added. “I don’t know a lot about this organization, but I know it’s dedicated to winning. I know where this organization has been and where it wants to get back to.”

After so many years of losing, the Raiders showed their players they were not willing to give up on the season. But the Raiders paid a staggering price for the 32-year-old Palmer, whose recent play has not approached his early success.

Palmer is a two-time Pro Bowler, but he missed much of the 2008 season with an elbow injury, and there have been concerns about diminished arm strength and accuracy ever since. During the lockout, many talent evaluators around the league doubted that Palmer would be worth even one first-round pick. Last season, he completed 61.8 percent of his passes for 26 touchdowns and 20 interceptions, matching a career high, as the Bengals sank to 4-12.

But Jackson has a long relationship with Palmer, whom he helped recruit at Southern California and whom he worked with when he was a receivers coach for the Bengals. And the Raiders are flush with speedy receivers who will present Palmer with viable options.

The Raiders’ next three games are against division rivals. After a game against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, in which Kyle Boller will probably start, the Raiders have a bye, which would give Palmer three weeks of practice before starting against the Denver Broncos and then the San Diego Chargers.

Jackson was noncommittal about whether Palmer might play this week.

“Would this have happened if Jason was here?” Jackson said. “Probably not.”

The Raiders believe they can win now. At 4-2 and one game behind the Chargers, they may be right. They better be. The new collective bargaining agreement makes first-round picks economically friendly to teams, and the Raiders have potentially given up their next two. They currently do not have second-, third- and fourth-round picks in 2012. The fourth-rounder was given up for Campbell, who now becomes expendable. He will be a free agent next year.

And if Palmer does not play well, Jackson, who has gained significant influence within the Raiders in the wake of Davis’s death because of the team’s success, figures to lose some of his credibility on a team that will probably hire a general manager after the season.

Bengals, Palmer moving apart after conversations

NFL.com StaffPublished: October 15th, 2011 | Tags: , , , ,

Bengals owner Mike Brown is dead-set that QB Carson Palmer will either play for the Bengals or stay retired. As many expected, that hasn’t changed.

nfl.use('nfl-video', function (Y) { var video = new Y.NFL.Video.Player({ srcNode: "#video-player-09000d5d82320af5", align: "right", contentId: "09000d5d82320af5", related: "home", adSetting: "1", dartURL: "http://ad.doubleclick.net/pfadx/nfl.special/blog/home;s1=blog;s2=home;slot=inpage;nfl=ad;tile=3;sz=640x360;ord=?", playerName: "blog_small_embedded", render: true, size: "inline", uniqid: "09000d5d82320af5"});});

With Tuesday’s trade deadline looming, even a potential trade that looks good on paper — one that could help the Bengals’ young roster — isn’t enough to budge Brown. But that doesn’t mean Palmer hasn’t been working behind the scenes.

“I don’t think (a trade is) going to happen,” NFL Network’s Michael Lombardi said on “NFL Total Access” on Friday. “But, I do know this: Carson Palmer has been in direct contact, himself, with Brown. Those phone calls have proven to be fruitless. … Each phone conversation they get further and further apart.”

Not that it mattered in Brown’s decision-making, but ultimately what the first five weeks of the season have provided is leverage. The Bengals are winning, and rookie QB Andy Dalton is balling. If the Bengals want to move Palmer, it will happen when Brown is good and ready.

Time to add Bengals RB Scott off waivers

Michael FabianoMichael Fabiano | Tags: Cedric Benson, Bernard Scott, Cincinnati Bengals

Cedric Benson has been notified that he’ll be suspended three games following his latest off-field incident during the offseason. NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora reports that Benson will appeal the suspension, so it looks like he’ll be available to face the Niners in Week 3.

In the event that the appeal fails, however, Benson would then miss those three games (starting in Week 4) against the Bills, Jaguars, and Colts — all attractive matchups for backup Bernard Scott. The third-year veteran would be the new featured back, making him a must-add player. Scott is a free agent in over 99 percent of NFL.com leagues.

Browns Let One Slip Away Against Bengals

After watching the Bengals build a 10-0 lead at the end of the 1st quarter., the Browns gained momentum back before halftime by establishing a 14-13 halftime lead.

The Browns would tack on a FG in the 3rd Qtr., and the score would remain that way until there was less than 6 minutes to go in the 4th Qtr., when Cincinnati’s back-up QB, Bruce Gradkowski, hit rookie WR, A.J. Green, for a 41-yard score that gave the Bengals a 20-17 lead late in the game.

Cincinnati would regain possession of the ball right before the 2:00 warning in the 4th Quarter. Cedric Benson finished off the Browns with a 39-yard scamper to the end zone for his first TD of the game.

Final Score: Bengals 27 – Browns 20

The Pat Shurmur era got off to a rough start against the Bengals. In the 1st Qtr. alone, the Browns new head coached watched his team manage 6 penalties and come-up with just 3 yards of total offense.

Cincinnati, however, took advantage of great field position on their first two drives, and rookie QB, Andy Dalton, surprised a few critics as he led the Bengals to a 10-0 1st Qtr. lead.

After the previous three kickoffs sailed out the end zone, Browns return-man, Joshua Cribbs, decided to finally bring one out. Cribbs’ return gave the Browns excellent field position, setting the offense up on the Cincinnati 42-yard line.

Gradkowski replaces Dalton for Bengals

NFL.com StaffPublished: September 11th, 2011 | Tags: Andy Dalton, Bruce Gradkowski, Cincinnati Bengals, Week 1 injuries 2011

UDPATE: Per The Cincinnati Enquirer, Dalton appears to have avoided a more serious injury. “It’s fine,” Dalton said. “I couldn’t have gripped the ball like I wanted to. The plan is to play next week.” Bengals coach Marvin Lewis was hopeful that Dalton can return next week and said the initial scans were negative.

Bengals rookie QB Andy Dalton didn’t make it to the end of his first NFL start.

Dalton appeared to be injured on the Bengals’ final play of the first half Sunday against the Browns when he took a hard hit. He was replaced by veteran Bruce Gradkowski to start the second half. He’s officially questionable to return with a right wrist injury.

Dalton was back on the sideline with a baseball cap on and attempted to throw, but he appeared to be wincing. He was effective in the first half, going 10-of-15 passing for 81 yards and one touchdown.

Bengals’ Lewis backs bus over Ochocinco

Frank TadychPublished: January 20th, 2011 | Tags: Chad Ochocinco, Cincinnati Bengals, Marvin Lewis

Like many divorces, the situation between Bengals coach Marvin Lewis and Chad Ochocinco seems to be getting messy. Perhaps the only thing that’s left is to make it official.

The speculation has been building for weeks that it’s the end of the line in Cincinnati for Ochocinco, who is under contract for $6 million (all in base salary) next season. When Lewis was officially brought back with a two-year extension, Ochocinco said he wasn’t sure he could ever play for Lewis again.

Meanwhile, Ochocinco has been openly flirting via Twitter with the idea of playing for the Patriots … and the Raiders. He suggested a coded Tweet to Ian R. Rapoport of The Boston Herald it would be “epic” to play for Bill Belichick. Jerry McDonald recounts several Tweets in which Ochocinco praises Raiders coach Hue Jackson, who he calls “the greatest coach I ever had.”

Well, if Ochocinco felt that he was thrown under the bus when he was called “mopey,” then Lewis verbally backed up the same bus over him again on Thursday with a second shot.

“Nobody was talking about him. He didn’t stand that,” Lewis said regarding the tweet about the Patriots, per Bengals.com. “You want them to talk about you, win football games.”

Ouch.

We’re patiently awaiting a response on that from @ochocinco.

It stands to reason an exit out of Cincinnati won’t be a quick exit. If the Bengals want to explore a trade for Ochocinco, that can’t happen until an agreement over a new agreement on the CBA is reached. So stay tuned for more of the above.

Lombardi: Bengals won’t trade Palmer

NFL.com StaffPublished: January 24th, 2011 | Tags: Carson Palmer, Cincinnati Bengals, Michael Lombardi, Mike Brown, NFL Total Access

Carson Palmer wants out of Cincinnati. Bengals owner Mike Brown says he won’t make a trade.

So will Brown budge? NFL Network information man Michael Lombardi doesn’t see it happening.

“I stress this strongly: Mike Brown is a man of his word,” Lombardi said. “When he says he’s not going to do something, he won’t do it.”

But let’s just suppose … if Palmer did leave, where could he end up? Lombardi suggests the 49ers, who have several members of the front office represented by agent David Dunn, who also represents Palmer.

Bengals QB Palmer rolling vs. the Chargers

Adam RankPublished: December 26th, 2010 | Tags: Carson Palmer, Chad Ochocinco, Cincinnati Bengals, Jermaine Gresham, Jerome Simpson, Terrell Owens

Well maybe it was his receivers fault. No Chad Ochocinco and no Terrell Owens has been no problem for QB Carson Palmer as the embattled signal caller has already tossed a pair of touchdowns vs. the Chargers.

Wasn’t this supposed to be a blowout for the Chargers?

Palmer has been perfect so far, throwing touchdowns to TE Jermaine Gresham and WR Jerome Simpson — household names you probably know better from their reality show. Oh wait, that’s right, Gresham and Simpson don’t have a reality show. They are too busy scoring touchdowns.

Palmer might not be making a huge impression on fantasy enthusiasts — he is only starting in 11 percent of leagues — but he could be showing off his skills to his next employer. Right Arizona Cardinals?

Bengals Place DE Antwan Odom on IR

For the second straight season, the Bengals have been forced to place DE Antwan Odom on season-ending injured reserve. He ends the year with a total of four games played, four total tackles, no sacks, and one pass defensed.

Odom has struggled with injuries in all three seasons in Cincinnati after signing a mammoth five-year, 29.5 million dollar free agent contract in 2008. The former Tennessee Titan was meant to bring the team the kind of pass rushing threat they haven’t had in decades, but he has yet to do so.

The closest he came was during the first 6 games of 2009 in which he led the league with 8 sacks and had a blocked kick. Most of those stats came in a road win at Green Bay where Odom sacked Packers QB Aaron Rodgers five times. He would later tear an Achilles tendon, sidelining him for the final 10 games. In addition to the injuries, Odom missed four games this year with a league-imposed suspension for testing positive at training camp for a banned substance. The former Alabama standout professed that his positive test was the result of him accidentally taking one of his wife’s weight loss pills. He appealed the suspension but lost.

All told, Odom has played in 22 games as a Bengal out of a possible 44 (50%), and has amassed 49 tackles, 11 sacks, 5 passes defensed, and two forced fumbles in stripes.

Palmer expected to make start for Bengals

Frank TadychPublished: November 25th, 2010 | Tags: Carson Palmer, Cincinnati Bengals, Kara Henderson, Marvin Lewis

UPDATE: Palmer is active for the game.

Carson Palmer‘s status for Thursday night’s meeting with the Jets was believed to be a game-time decision, but Bengals coach Marvin Lewis didn’t need that much time.

Lewis told NFL Network’s Kara Henderson hours before the game that the QB will start.

Palmer, who was listed as probable on the Bengals’ injury report, returned to practice Wednesday after missing the previous two days because of a foot injury he aggravated during last Sunday’s loss to the Bills. Sources close to the team told NFL Network insider Michael Lombardi on Wednesday that the injury still hadn’t healed.

But Palmer is going to give it a go.

The Bengals’ biggest injury concerns are on defense. Starting FS Chris Crocker (right knee) was placed on injured reserve, DE Antwan Odom (wrist) and SS Roy Williams (concussion) already have been declared out, and CBs Johnathan Joseph (ankle), Brandon Ghee (groin) and Rico Murray (ankle) are all questionable.

We’ll have more updates when the inactives are announced.

Colts WR Collie out vs. Bengals

Adam RankPublished: November 9th, 2010 | | Tags: Peyton Manning, Indianapolis Colts, Reggie Wayne, Austin Collie, Pierre Garcon, Blair White

The Colts have already ruled out WR Austin Collie for Sunday’s game vs. the Bengals. The team currently has three receivers on the depth chart: Reggie Wayne, Pierre Garcon and rookie Blair White.

White is available in 98 percent of NFL.com leagues and would be a great option off the waiver wire this week. Because Colts QB Peyton Manning is coming off a loss — and a game-ending interception — means that he will attempt about 70 passes this week. Seriously, play all of the prominent Colts receivers this week.
