UPDATE: For the second time Sunday a member of the Seahawks has been taken off the field on a stretcher. This time it was CB Marcus Trufant, who was kneed in the side of the head while attempting to make a tackle during the third quarter. Trufant was injured when he went low to make a tackle on Bears TE Kellen Davis, and immediately went down to the field and was motionless as if he were out cold. Medical personnel for the Seahwks removed Trufant’s facemask, immobilized him on a backboard and carted him slowly off the field. The team announced Trufant has movement in all of his extremeties.
It was a scary moment Sunday at Chicago’s Solider Field when Seahawks TE John Carlson was carted off with an apparent head injury. But it appears Carlson might have avoided a very serious injury.
Carlson was injured midway through the first quarter when he came down head-first on the sideline after he had been catapulted into the air at the end of a 14-yard reception. Carlson laid motionless on the field for several moments as medical staff rushed to his side. He was immobilized and strapped to a backboard before he was loaded onto a cart and taken off the field.
The Seahawks announced Carlson had feeling in his extremities and that he was carted off as a precaution. It was a positive sign that Carlson clearly was conversing with members of the medical staff as they loaded him onto the cart. Carlson won’t return to the game.
It’s also worth noting that the Seahawks have only one other tight end — second-year pro Cameron Morrah — on the active roster for Sunday’s game. Carlson is a favorite target of Matt Hasselbeck, and the Seahawks likely will be limited in using two tight end sets the rest of the way.
