Haley confirms Charles’ move to IR

Chiefs coach Todd Haley confirmed the expected Monday when he said star RB Jamaal Charles will be transferred to season-ending injured reserve in the wake of a serious knee injury.

Charles, who rushed for 1,467 yards last season, tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during Sunday’s blowout loss to the Lions when he took an awkward step out of bounds after completing a long run.

“It’s not good. Jamaal will be placed on IR,” Haley said during his Monday news conference. “We have to pull together as a team.”

Charles had an MRI exam, which confirmed the severity of the injury.

“It’s unfortunate for Jamaal, as he had high expectations for this year,” Haley said. “As far as my team, we have to step up as a team and find a better way of playing football.”

The Chiefs now lose their top offensive player one week after losing a top defender in safety Eric Berry, who suffered a season-ending ACL injury of his own. Haley is on the hot seat in Kansas City, but it’s impossible to blame him for everything. Some bad luck has mixed in with the bad play for the 0-2 Chiefs.
