It’s hard enough to finish the New York City Marathon. Try starting from dead last.
That’s exactly what Amani Toomer, recently retired receiver for the New York Giants, did this weekend. He began dead last to help a local NYC charity (the New York Road Runners Club youth programs). Timex donated $1 for every runner that Toomer passed along the way to the finish line. At the end of the race Toomer estimated he passed $20,000 worth of the 46,000 runners participating in the marathon.
Toomer also eclipsed Hall of Famer Lynn Swann‘s mark for fastest time in the NYC Marathon by a former NFL player. Toomer finished the marathon in just over four hours.
Swann was the last NFL player to run in the marathon, when he did it in 1993. Other notables who ran this year’s New York Marathon included reality show veteran Ethan Zohn, tennie pro Amelie Mauresmo, former tennis pro Justin Gimelstob and NBC’s Al Roker.
Which current NFL star would you like to see take to the streets of New York?
