It seems that Bengals WR Terrell Owens is defying the expectations of everyone this season, including his own.
When the Bengals signed Owens to a one-year, $2 million deal that included $2 million worth of incentives back in August, few felt he would reach the series of benchmarks to fatten his bank account. Including Owens, who called the incentives “an unreachable goal.”
Owens’ contract calls for two tiers of bonuses. He’ll get $333,333 each for reaching 60 catches, 900 yards, or 10 touchdowns. He can also land another $333,333 each for 100 catches, 1,300 yards and 14 touchdowns.
At the halfway mark of the season, Owens has 55 receptions for 770 yards and seven touchdowns. As Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer brings to light, it looks like Owens will reach both tiers of incentives. He’s currently on pace for 110 catches for 1,540 yards and 14 touchdowns, which would set the franchise single-season record for yards and rank second in both receptions and touchdowns. Kudos to Reedy for keeping on top of this one.
Even if he doesn’t reach them, and even if WR Chad Ochocinco isn’t happy, it has been a pretty amazing season for the soon-to-be 37-year-old Owens, one that could bring him an extra $2 million.
