Cris Carter: Moss ‘realizes he made a mistake’

Cris Carter and Randy Moss go way back, all the way back to the 1998 Minnesota Vikings team that featured one of the most prolific offenses in NFL history. And it was Carter who mentored Moss.

So it speaks volumes when Carter offers insight into the mind of Moss, which he did Tuesday during an appearance on The Dennis & Callahan Show  on WEEI. While nothing has happened for Moss in Tennessee, as he has so aptly described, hindsight would show he could still be a part of the 11-2 Patriots.

On that topic, Carter said he knows Moss is “full of regret” and ”knows for certain” Moss realizes now that he made a mistake in pushing his way out of New England. Carter believes that after finding out from the Patriots he wouldn’t be offered a contract, Moss took it to mean he wouldn’t be there. Moss has had some memorable press conference moments, and his rant in Week 1 set the tone for much of what would follow.

“He made a vital mistake when he had that impromptu press conference,” Carter said. “He said those things, and after that, it was over with. It wasn’t a whole bunch of things. It was that right there.”

As fate would have it, Moss is now playing … errr, not playing … for his next contract. Carter believes what he’s not doing on the field is hurting him. If Moss wants to play in 2011 — and Carter says he does — he may have cost himself a lot of money.

“The thing about Randy is, he’s got a lot of bad video out there,” Carter said. “A lot of bad video. If you watch it, every game since he left New England, not impressive at all.

“Bad rep. Bad effort. Bad video. That’s how we evaluate talent in the NFL. We watch the video. And we analyze it on what we see.”
