I said it: Giants will win the NFC East

I can’t help but notice the New York Giants are looking better and better each time I take a look.

Of course we have the big showdown in the NFC East this weekend with the high-flying Eagles, who just finished whacking the Cowboys and now have the Michael Vick Experience taking full root in the City of Brotherly Love hitting the road to take on the Giants.

Not only do I see the Giants winning this game, they’re my pick to win the NFC East as well. That’s right. As Raheem Morris said a few weeks ago, “I said it.”

In my mind this game hinges on two things for the Giants. One, containing Vick. Obviously stopping Vick is nearly impossible, but containing him is key because he controls both the running and passing games for the Eagles. Shady McCoy gets the majority of touches, but Vick taking off and running is a big part of what they do.

The second phase is the ability of Eli Manning to take care of the football. He has 19 interceptions and five fumbles lost this season. You can throw out the tipped passes and ones that were dropped, but it’s still 19 interceptions. That can’t happen in this game for the Giants to win.

We’re not used to seeing these turnovers out of Manning. I don’t know that there’s necessarily anything wrong with him, but he’s making big mistakes at the wrong time. I think he can get it corrected and will take care of it in this game.

I see some positive signs for the Giants. Pro Bowler David Diehl is healthy and back at left tackle. Rich Seubert is playing well at center in the absence of Shaun O’Hara. If O’Hara can get back and Seubert can slide back to guard, it would be even better for a line that is already producing. The running game has been clicking since the move to feature both Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs, who have each had more than 100 yards the last two weeks.

I think the Giants will slow down the Eagle’s running game and their pass rush will get to Vick, taking away his running lanes and containing him overall. The win puts the Giants on their way to the division crown, while the Eagles will get in on a wild card ticket.
