So it’s interesting to hear the perspective of Charles Barkley, someone who has had his share of ups and downs in the public eye.
“I always say, once you have been to jail and you’ve paid your dues, you start out back at zero,” Barkley told NFL Network. “Everybody is not going to forgive him, everybody is not going to like him. But you could say the same thing about Brett Favre. You can say the same thing about T.O. You can say the same thing about Roger Clemens, Barry Bonds. The notion that you can make everyone happy is absurd.
“Kobe Byrant had a bad rep a few years ago. Ray Lewis had a bad rep a few years ago. They kept doing their thing and winning, and the perception changes. It’s just about winning and losing; that’s all it’s about.”
Barkley’s opinion is dead-on on both accounts. In our snap-judgement, instant-impact society, many both forgive and forget easily. Fair or not, others will never move on. But Barkley is rooting for Vick to get the ultimate redemption.
“Some people are going to love Michael Vick, some people are going to hate Michael Vick. But I’m really rooting for him. … If he could hold up the Vince Lombardi trophy, I think it would be one of the most incredible things I’ve ever seen in my life.”
